Sacraments
Infant Baptism If you would like to have your child baptized, call the parish office at 221-1521 or e-mail ihmoffice@ihmparish.org. You will be asked to provide information for the baptismal certificate and parish records. First-time parents will need to schedule an initial meeting with Father Bart. Baptisms are typically celebrated after 10:15 Mass on Sundays, however we may honor special requests, such as when Godparents will be visiting from out of town.
First Eucharist (Communion) and First Reconciliation (Confession) In 2nd grade or older, we prepare children to receive the Sacrament of First Reconciliation (January) and First Eucharist (last Sunday in April). We use a sacramental preparation program taken from the Sadlier Sacrament Program. The students receive a book for both sacraments that they use at either Religious Education classes on Monday afternoons (public school students) or during the day at IHM School (IHM School students). The First Reconciliation book gives children a beginning experience of what it means to know right from wrong, to be sorry, and to make up or reconcile. It helps them understand everyone's need both to ask forgiveness and to give forgiveness. The aim is that early positive experience of this sacrament as one of peace and forgiveness will also motive them to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation on a regular basis. The First Communion book is rooted in the Mass so the children and their families will develop a deep and abiding love for Eucharist through celebrations shared in the supportive embrace of the family and the parish. The Mass is presented as the central expression of our Catholic faith in which Christ is really present to us. The children are prepared to celebrate the Eucharist for the first time with reverence, understanding, and hope. Along with studying the books and attending religious education classes, families play a large role in the preparation process. Throughout the year, there are several meetings/retreats where parents and children attend together to learn more about their faith and the particular sacrament. These meetings give families a chance to renew and learn more about their faith. If you have any questions about the Sacrament of First Reconciliation or First Communion, please contact Margaret Breunig Clark at 221-1001 or mclark@ihmschool.org. Confirmation Preparation for Confirmation is offered for students in their junior year of high school or older, as well as for adults who have not been confirmed. Sessions are held on Sunday evenings in the Church Meeting Room, beginning in the early fall. Contact Eileen Hribar, 221-1777 or ehribar@ihm-school.org for more information.
Sacraments for older students If an older student missed a sacrament because of any circumstance, such as moving, divorce, illness, etc., arrangements can be made to help the family prepare for First Eucharist, First Reconciliation, or Baptism. Contact the parish office at 221-1521 or ihmoffice@ihmparish.org. Marriage Getting married in the Catholic Church involves several steps, making it necessary that you begin the process at least four months before the wedding date. Please contact Fr. Bart Timmerman at 221-1521 to learn more about the preparation process and what the requirements are for marriage in the Catholic Church.
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) This is the process by which adults who are not Catholic, or who have never been baptized into any faith, or who were baptized but received no further instruction for sacraments, can investigate the Catholic Church and come to discover if they do indeed wish to be baptized and/or complete their initiation through the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. The process involves learning, prayer, and time to answer questions that participants may have. Contact the parish office for more information (221-1521) or ihmoffice@ihmparish.org Reconciliation (Confession) Private confessions are on Saturdays from 4:00-4:30 pm in the church Reconciliation Room. Communal celebrations take place seasonally. The sacrament can also be requested by calling Fr. Bart Timmerman at 221-1521.
Anointing of the Sick A communal celebration of Anointing of the Sick takes place each fall at weekend masses. Families or friends are asked to contact the parish office to request a private celebration of this sacrament. Call 221-1521.
